The Faculty of Mathematics (previously Department of Mathematics) was founded in 1958 and one of the earliest departments established in Qinghai University for Nationalities. There were two undergraduate majors ‘mathematics’ and ‘chemistry’ before 1983. It mainly provided ethnic cadres of different level and teachers for primary and secondary schools in the province. With the constant development of teaching reforms and economic construction to meet the urgent demands of the talents with practical abilities, the department persisted in the university principle ‘united, industrious, practical and renovational’ and in the educational thought ‘humanity is stressed and country prosperity will be achieved by scientific education’. All staff worked with severe attitude toward teaching and practical style, did creative contributions , consistently stepped forward, intentively joined in reforms, worked out teaching plans for different majors reasonably scientifically. Its majors expands from simple to varieties specifically in application. In 1993, it was renamed as the Department of Applied Mathematics.
  In 1998, the major ‘ mathematics’ was adjusted to the one ‘mathematics and applied mathematics(including normal orientation) according to the major contents adjusted and published by the National Education Ministry.
From this point, the department follows the principle ‘to solidify the basic majors and strengthen the applied science’ and actively apply for undergraduate majors in applied science. From the year 2000, the department has successfully got the approval of running four majors such as‘financial management’, ‘information and computerization science’ , ‘accounting’ and ‘ statistics. In the meantime, it applied for the right for conferring degrees for two postgraduate majors such as ‘basic mathematics’ and ‘operational research and cybernetics’. It also constructed a laboratory for mathematics model. In April,2002, due to the unification of Qinghai Nationalities College and Qinghai Vocational Technique College (previously Qinghai Normal College), the applied mathematics department was renamed as mathematics department, under which the financial accounting department was established. The two sections were operated in one working system. In July, 2004, the financial accounting department separated from the mathematics department and entered the economics and administration college, a newly established junior college. Again in June, 2005, the mathematics department was renamed as the mathematics college. For better distribution of the resources and full development of resource effect in order to achieve the purpose of completely strengthening the comprehensive running power, the applied mathematics research institute was formally established in January, 2006 after the approval by the provincial government.
   With the development of half century , presently the Mathematics College has a group of teaching and research staff who are powerful in capacity, richly experienced in teaching, strong in their scientific research and reasonable in their composition. There are 38 members, among which 34 are teachers composed of 13 full professors, 9 associate professors, 7 lecturer, and 5 assistant. There is one teacher having Dr. Degree, 13 teachers having Master Degree (including those in enrollment). There are 9 teachers under the age 35, 19 teachers aged between 36 to 55 and 6 teachers aged over 55. There are two nation scaled expert, one provincial scaled expert, two excellent nation scaled teachers and 5 provincial or collegiate backbone teachers.
   At present, the faculty of mathematics has five teaching and research sections such as ‘mathematics analysis’, ‘higher algebra’, ‘geometry and mathematics education’, ‘higher mathematics’ and ‘statistics and computation’. There are more 9400 volumes in its library. It has three four year undergraduate majors such as ‘mathematics and applied mathematics’ including normal orientation, ‘information and computerization science’, ‘statistics. It has one three year undergraduate major named ‘mathematics education’ including normal and information technique orientation. There are 12 classes with 363 four- year undergraduate students and 136 three-year undergraduate students.
   In recent years great effort has been made in bettering disciplines structure, expanding the area of teaching, improving the teaching quality and teaching conditions so that great progress has been achieved in the discipline, course, teaching staff, teaching and research construction. Especially the great achievements have been made outstandingly in combinatorial mathematics, half algebra theory, non-classic logic inference, graph theory and network, math education for ethnics, quantity economics. More than 200 articles have been published in academic journals both home and abroad. More than 60 articles out of the whole are published in the famous journals such as ‘The Australasian journal of combinatorics’, ‘discrete math’, ‘journal of applied math’ etc. Several articles are indexed in the publications such as ‘Mathematical Review’, ‘ German Math Digest’ and ‘Russian Math Digest’. Several national and provincial research projects have been completed. A serious of creative contributions are made and awarded due to their leading positions both home and abroad in the discipline. In 2003 the faculty was consistently approved and highly evaluated in the first round of undergraduate teaching evaluation organized by the Education Ministry. In 2004 the ‘mathematics’ and ‘mathematics analysis’ were confirmed as the key major and course respectively in the province.
   In more than 40 years, it’s the consistent effort and industrious contributions from several generations of staff in the faculty that outstanding achievements and plenty results have been made in different fields. The faculty has brought out more than 3000 academic and technique talents of concerning major. It has made certain contributions to the development of education, technique and economy of Qinghai province and even western area of China.
