The Literature
Institute of Qinghai Nationalities University, formerly the Chinese
Literature Department, has had students majoring in Chinese language
and literature since 1953. Originally, the department was called
the National Chinese Class and served as a teaching department of
the Qinghai Nationalities Public School. There were courses for
undergraduate and associate¡¯s degrees. Chinese language literature
was then one among the five majors of Qinghai Nationalities University.
Chinese Language Literature became a distinct department from Tibetan
Language Literature and formed an independent discipline, officially
named ¡°Chinese Department¡± in 1962 and renamed ¡°Han Language and
Literature Department¡± in 1963. In 1977 the college entrance examination
was restored, and the academic system of a four-year undergraduate
program was instituted. In April of 2002, this department merged
with the Chinese Language Department of Qinghai Higher Vocational
Technical Institute (original Qinghai Teaching Junior College) and
became the Chinese Language and Literature Department. Then, in
2005, the name changed to the Literature Institute. Since 1985,
this department cooperates with the Northwest Normal University
to offer a joint Masters of Ancient Chinese Literature and a Masters

Language for secretaries. In 2000, the undergraduate curriculum
for teachers was inaugurated. In 2005, a new Chinese Language and
