General Background of The
Department of Tibetology
The department of Tibetology of Qinghai Nationalities
University was founded in 1956 and has educated approximately 5,000
talented students to the present. It has also made a significant
contribution to the cultural education and social progress within
the territory of Qinghai province. After more than 50 years of construction
and development, the Tibetology department offers regular college
courses and graduate education at the masterӮs level in a unique,
multilevel integrated system of high education. Our department has
highly qualified teachers£¬who are notable inside and outside of
Qinghai province. They are especially skilled at Tibetan language
and literature teaching. The department has been authorized by the
Academic Degree Committee of the State Council to grant Master's
degrees since1981.It was one of the first departments to be given
such authority. It has been recognized as a ”°essential subject”±
of the provincial level since 1995. The department was also authorized
by the Ministry of Education of China to be in charge of examination
for independence study of Tibetan language and literature since
1997. Since 2002 our department has begun planning for a Ph.D. program£»In
2003 we acquired permission to grant a Master's degree in the study
of religion £»In 2004 the department won the title of the ”°national
recognition for excellence in classical literature”±.In 2005 we acquired
permission to grant Master's degree in the subject of philosophy
and history. Our department thinks highly of teacher training. We
have academic leaders with an enterprising spirit and young and
middle-aged teachers who are the backbone of the academic enterprise.
In our department there are total of 29 teaching and administrative
staff members ,including 10 professors, 6 associate professors,
7 lecturers, 2 full-time administrators, and 1 librarian. 15 of
an teaching have Master degree, and 4 are Ph.D. candidates. Our
distinguished teaching stuff have received the following awards:

1 teacher won a prize from the State Ministry
of Education;
1 teacher won the Zengxianzi Higher Teacher
Education Award;
2 teachers were granted the title of ”°academic
leaders”± of the University.

”±of Qinghai province;
1 teacher is responsible for tutoring doctoral
candidate. In the past 5 years£¬our department faculty in addition
to fulfilling their teaching obligations, has made brilliant achievements
in academic research. They have published many books and research
papers. 10 of our faculty members have gone to America, France,
England, and Holland for an international conferences and academic
exchanges.
After the reform and adjustment of the education
system, undergraduate education in our department consists of five
subject tracks to choose from. The tracks are Tibetan language and
literature, Chinese and Tibetan translation, Tibetan and English
translation, teacher education and computer science. Graduate student
education has four majors including Tibetan language and literature,
religion, philosophy and history. For graduate students there are
10 different tracks to choose from:
Tibetan Classic literature, Chinese and
Tibetan translation, linguisticsӢTibetan modern literature ӢTibetan
folk literature ӢGesar Epic researchӢIndian classical philosophy
and formal logic,ӢTibetan Buddhist scriptures, the history of Tibetan
Buddhism and Tibetan classical philosophy. Our library catalogue
includes approximately 9,000 books. It has one Tibetan language
lab and one multifunctional room for research students.
Development plan and basic approach
To consistently develop our under graduate

in Tibetan language and literature, Chinese and Tibetan translation,
Tibetan and English translation, teacher education and computer

To concentrate on graduate students education.
To enlarge the number of graduate students.
To increase the number of majors for graduate
students beyond the four existing majors: Tibetan language and literature,
religion , philosophy and history.

doctorate degree.

Regarding the education of college students,
our model is to lay a good foundation in the first two years and
then allow the students to choose their own track in the last two
years. The course work should be according to which track the students
choose.
Faculty and student body follow principles
according to the ideological guidance of DenxiaopingӮs theory and
the three representatives of Jangzemin .We use a scientific outlook
to guide our work founded upon rigorous scholarship and strong work
ethic. We march on without ceasing and strive to build the Tibetology
department into a top-rate department.
